A unique, case-insensitive, name, consisting of a string made up of alphanumeric
characters and dashes separated by periods, that the Domain Name System
maps to IP numbers and other information; an identifier of a computer
or site on the Internet.
Well, what does that mean?
In simple terms for a web site, a domain name allows you to provide an
address (subject to availability) to your web site, this address can be
typed into the address bar of a browser to view your site.
It is possible you already have a web site or some web space supplied
free by one of the many providers on the web, chances are the address
will follow the pattern below:
www.hostingprovider.com/username/index
www.username.hostingprovider.co.uk/index
www.hostingprovider.net/00f5t461-1kld/index
206.124.5.222/username/index
This is ok for some people, however for that more professional look you
could get a domain name such as the following:
www.myname.com
www.mycompany.co.uk
It doesn't matter where the site is really stored, all the viewer will
see is your domain name and the site itself. |
